Interview: Mike Netley and CASE

{ BuildTheWoods }

Case BMX Magazine, if you haven’t heard of it before, is free publication put together by Mike Netley. Issue One came out last year to a good reception and Mike’s just had Issue Two back from the printers so I thought it would be a good chance to get in touch with Mike and find a little more about it.
Interview is below the cut

BTW: Yo mike hows things?
MN: All good man, chillin’! Issue two is back now so I’m sure I’m going to get super busy again any minute now with shipping out copies and what not, and starting on the 3rd issue of course. Fingers crossed for some good weather.

Can you give us a bit of background of you and the mag?

Erhhh, well I submitted photos to Ride for a few years and had the odd photo published in Dig but it wasn’t really enough. On my part I mean. Steve, and Mark Noble before him, were always down for hearing my ideas and for me getting involved, but I wanted to do more. If I’m honest I never really pushed myself to get more involved and thought it would be kinda cool to do my own thing. Or at least try too.
Background on me, I’ve been riding almost every day for the past 10 years, shooting photos for 6 and loving every minute of it.

How does case differ to what’s currently on the market??

I guess the biggie is that it’s free and is still of a very high quality. From the photos right down to the quality of the paper used. The content isn’t too dissimilar to what is in the other mags, but I do have a few ideas that id like to try and I am personally very into the whole trail scene but that in no way means the magazine is heavily trail related, despite what you might assume if you were to look at both covers. Ha!
Case is also very much a one-man army, all opinions expressed are just that, opinions, and I wanna try and keep things as real as possible.

Who’s involved?
I pretty much do everything myself. From shooting photos to ad sales, and from arranging articles to proofing all the pages. I’m still holding down a full time job so at times it proves rather tricky to jungle all these things my self but I’m coping.
I have had some help along the way as far as design/layout goes from Davros, Will Herrmann, Johann Chan and George Marshall, and my good friend Ollie has been helping me out a little on the ad sales side of things. Mark Noble offered a little help in the beginning as far as spreading the word and getting me in touch with some very useful contacts which I’m very appreciative of. He went to Interbike last year when Case was very much getting started and told a lot of people about it which was super cool of him. As far as financing things, it’s all out of my pocket. Hence why i’m still holding down a full time job. I might have borrowed a small amount from the bank as well….
As for photography and words, that list is quite a long one but I would like to give a huge thanks to John Dye, George Marshall and Vincent Perraud for all their submissions and beliefs that this magazine could work. Thanks guys.

So issue two has just been printed. How was the second compared to the first? Easier or harder?
It was harder to begin with because of it being winter. Getting content was a struggle. It all sort of came together last minute if I’m honest. Once I had all the articles in it was a lot easier since I had an idea of what I wanted to overall feel of the magazine to look like and knew how InDesign worked.

What have you got in this issue?
The source trip to Madrid, Spain.
Geoff Slattery interview.
Level Vibes flatland jam.
Brian Yeagle talks about filming projects and travel.
Will Herrmann hates winter.
Isaac Lesser bio.
Ross Head shakes some salt on his shovel.
Jimmy Rushmore has a now and then feature.
Mark Mulville bike check.
Large photo section.
Product pages and reviews.
Tom Robinson ‘Robbo’ ‘I listen to’ feature.
And the Simpel Session from Tallinn, Estonia.

That’s the bulk but there are a few other one pagers and what not.
There is also a competition from the guys at Profile to win about £200’s worth of cranks and a chain ring.

How do you go about getting submissions? What submissions are you after?
I will take anything as long as the quality of the photo is good and you can back up the photo with some interesting words. I have a personal heavy interest in the art of riding trails but I understand that this magazine is for the general public and needs to cover all aspects. If the rider is well known then that helps, but if not, no biggie. The quality of the content is what appeals to me the most.

How can people submit stuff to you?
If anyone wants to send me idea’s and what not then please feel free to do so  for that one… submissions and what not are definitely encouraged.

When can we expect the third?
Late June.
All submissions need to be proposed ASAP and would need to be completed by late May to give me enough time to piece it all together and to get it printed by Late June.

Where can people get hold of you and the mag? Website/distro/twitter etcetc
any bmx store in the UK that has accounts with profile and/or 4down or from the online store at casebmx.com
